Vukovar Film Festival: Open Up Europe!
In its 6th year, the Vukovar Film Festival has added some novel elements to its program. A new out of competition category – “Europe Open Up!” – brings to audience members films from countries otherwise more difficult to come by, such as Iceland and Estonia.
These films as well as those in the out of competition category of “Planet Partner” will be shown in one of this year’s new locations –Vukovar’s sand island. “The films will be screened between 2 and 6 p.m., just when most of the citizens of Vukovar come to the island to get away from the heat. We think they’ll really like this idea,” say festival organizers.
As many as 43 films will be shown this year, from August 22 to 26th, including films awarded at the Berlin, Cannes and Sundance Film Festivals, such as German film “Barbara” directed by Christian Petzold, winner of Berlin’s Silver Bear for best director, and fantasy drama “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” by US director Benham Zeitlin, winner of four awards at the Cannes Film Festival. You can also catch at the festival Woody Allen’s “To Rome with Love,” starring Oscar-winning Penelope Cruz and Roberto Benigni.
Be sure to also take part in this year’s interactive entertainment program, including two film workshops, a competition for a short “Croatian War Veteran” story, and a legal copyright debate.
